Are Credit Card Rewards and Cashback Taxable? What You Need to Know

Person reviewing a credit card statement and tax paperwork to check how rewards are treated

Are Credit Card Rewards and Cashback Taxable? What You Need to Know

You hit the spending requirement on your new card, the $200 bonus lands, and a nagging thought arrives: will the IRS want a cut? Are credit card rewards taxable? The honest answer is usually no, but sometimes yes, and the difference comes down to how you earned the reward.

This guide sorts the common cases in plain English, from everyday cash back to referral bonuses and business cards. It is general education, not tax advice, so confirm your own situation with a qualified tax professional.

Are Credit Card Rewards Taxable? The Short Answer

In most everyday situations, no. Cash back, points, and miles earned by spending on your card are generally treated as a discount on what you bought, not as income. Rewards you receive without spending anything, such as a referral bonus, are different and are generally treated as taxable income.

A quick rule of thumb: if you had to buy something to get it, it is probably a rebate. If you did not, it is probably income.

Points and miles follow the same logic as cash back, so choosing between them in our travel vs. cashback cards guide is usually about value, not taxes. The rest of this article explains the details.

The Rebate Rule: Are Credit Card Rewards Taxable When You Spend?

The core idea is the rebate rule. If you spend $1,000 and get $20 back, the IRS has generally treated that $20 as a reduction in the price you paid, not as money you earned. Effectively, you paid $980. With no gain, there is usually no income to report. Welcome bonuses that require a minimum spend are generally viewed the same way, since you have to buy something to earn them.

The IRS has leaned this way in related areas too. In Announcement 2002-18, published in Internal Revenue Bulletin 2002-10, it said it would not treat frequent flyer miles and similar in-kind promotional benefits from business or official travel as an understatement of tax. That announcement covers airline perks, not card spending, and it excluded benefits converted to cash, so it is not a blanket rule. Still, it shows a long-standing reluctance to tax everyday loyalty perks.

Cash Back vs. Points and Miles: Does the Type Matter?

Are credit card rewards taxable differently if you pick points over cash back? Generally no. Cash back posted as a statement credit, a deposit, or a check is still a rebate when you earned it by spending. Points and miles redeemed for travel or gift cards usually follow the same reasoning.

What matters is how you earned the reward, not the form it takes. Official guidance written specifically for card rewards is thin, which is why most advice leans on the rebate idea and why a quick question to a tax professional is worth it if your situation is unusual.

Sign-Up Bonuses, Referrals and Other Taxable Perks

Some rewards do count as income. The reasoning is that a no-spend bonus is a payment to you, not a discount on something you purchased. The common ones:

  • Referral bonuses. Cash or points for referring a friend are generally income, because you did not buy anything to earn them.
  • No-spend bonuses. A bonus for simply opening an account, with no purchase required, is generally treated as income from the company that paid it.
  • Cash-equivalent purchases. In Anikeev v. Commissioner, the Tax Court looked at rewards earned by buying money orders and reloading prepaid cards in large volumes. It treated those rewards as taxable because the purchases resembled cash rather than products or services, and it limited its ruling to that case’s facts. Ordinary shopping was not the issue.
  • Savings interest. Interest on a savings account is generally taxable, unlike a spending rebate. If you are comparing bank offers, see our guide to high-yield savings vs. regular savings.

So the test is simple. Did you earn it by buying something, or did you receive it for doing something else? Asking whether credit card rewards taxable rules apply to a given perk usually comes back to that question.

Are Credit Card Rewards Taxable on Business Cards?

The same income logic applies, with a twist on the deduction side. Rewards generally reduce the net cost of what you bought for the business. Suppose you charge $5,000 of equipment and earn $100 back. Your deductible cost is generally $4,900 rather than $5,000. Referral and no-spend bonuses still count as income.

If one card carries both personal and business spending, the mix can complicate things, so many owners keep the two separate. Business tax rules vary with how you operate, so ask your preparer before settling on a treatment.

Credit Card Rewards Taxable or Not: Quick Scenario Guide

This table is a simplification, not a ruling:

How you earned it Usually taxable?
Cash back, points, or miles from purchases Generally no (treated as a rebate)
Welcome bonus after a minimum spend Generally no
Referral bonus Generally yes
Bonus for opening an account, no spending required Generally yes
Rewards from buying money orders or reloadable cards in volume Possibly yes

Form 1099-MISC and Reporting Thresholds

Issuers may send a Form 1099-MISC for taxable rewards. The IRS’s instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC set a $2,000 minimum for “other income” for tax years beginning after 2025, up from $600 before, and say the amount may be adjusted for inflation starting in 2027.

Are credit card rewards taxable if no form arrives? Generally, the rule depends on the reward, not the paperwork. Taxable income is generally reportable whether or not a 1099 shows up, so track your no-spend bonuses. If you receive a 1099 for rewards you believe came from spending, contact the issuer and ask a tax professional how to handle it.

A Hypothetical Example: Spending Rewards vs. a Referral Bonus

The numbers below are made up for illustration.

Say you earn a $200 welcome bonus after spending $2,000 in three months. Over a year you spend $18,000 and earn 1.5% cash back, which is $270. You also receive a $150 referral bonus for a friend.

  • Spending-based rewards: $200 + $270 = $470, generally not taxable.
  • Referral bonus: $150, generally taxable.

So are credit card rewards taxable in this example? Only the $150 referral bonus. At an assumed 22% federal rate, the tax on it would be about $33, before any state tax. That is an illustration, not a forecast, since your bracket and state rules will differ.

Notice how small the taxable slice is compared with the total. Most of the value here comes from ordinary spending, which is the part generally treated as a tax-free rebate.

How to Track Rewards Without Overcomplicating It

A few minutes of record keeping makes it easy to answer “are credit card rewards taxable?” at filing time:

  1. Keep a simple log. Note the date, issuer, amount, and whether you earned it by spending.
  2. Save the paper trail. Bonus emails and statement lines help, and our guide to how to read a credit card statement shows where rewards post.
  3. Watch for forms. Check early in the year for any 1099 from your issuers.
  4. Note returns. Returns can reduce rewards, so see chargeback vs. refund if a purchase is reversed.
  5. Plan ahead. If an offer does not require spending, assume it may be income and consider setting a little aside for taxes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming every bonus is tax-free. Referral and no-spend bonuses often make credit card rewards taxable.
  • Assuming no 1099 means nothing to report. The reporting threshold is not the same as the tax rule.
  • Ignoring state rules. State treatment can differ from federal treatment, so check yours.
  • Choosing a card for tax treatment alone. Fees, interest, and your spending habits matter far more.
  • Focusing on tax while ignoring interest. A 1.5% reward is easily erased by interest, so review how credit card interest is calculated and consider autopay to pay in full.
  • Treating general articles as personal advice. Your facts decide the answer.

Practical Takeaways

  • Are credit card rewards taxable? Generally not when earned by spending, because they are treated as rebates.
  • Referral and no-spend bonuses are generally taxable income.
  • Business cards follow the same logic, but rewards can reduce your deductible cost.
  • A missing 1099 does not erase a reporting duty.
  • Keep a simple log of how each reward was earned.
  • Recheck IRS thresholds each year, since the 1099 minimum changed for 2026.
  • When in doubt, ask a tax professional about your exact situation.

Final Thoughts: Are Credit Card Rewards Taxable for You?

For most people who earn cash back on regular purchases, the answer is no, and the rebate rule keeps things simple. The exceptions come from bonuses you receive without spending and from unusual strategies like buying cash equivalents in volume. Read each offer’s terms, know how every reward was earned, and keep a short log. Then you will be ready whichever way your situation falls. Rules and thresholds change, so recheck the IRS instructions before you file.
